For Sale - 1 Silver Bit Equestrian Coin by PeppermintShine For Sale - 1 Silver Bit Equestrian Coin by PeppermintShine
Closeup of both sides and the reeded edge, with US quarter for scale. The mirror finish of the fields came out perfectly. These coins are about 8 mm across bigger than a half-dollar.

Limited edition proof run, ordering via my Etsy shop, Canterlot Mint.

UPDATE: It didn't work out in the end, but I'm still glad I did it. Coins are now selling at the reduced price of $30 each. The current run is the last one that will ever be made.

I want this coin so much though the thing that bothers me is that in the show, the bits look like they were minted in gold not silver. This is just a small nit-pick but I understand why it's in silver.

They could be plated in a material that looks gold, like our "gold" dollar coins.

I know. I thought it was a shame that they'd make gold so cheap. If those bit coins really are solid gold, it would make the material in Princess Celestia's regalia worth about a barrel of apple cider and the gold in the dragon horde in Dragonshy equivalent to a heap of scrap copper rather than a heap of precious metal. Same goes for the dragon's gems. If there's no restraint in the use of gold, then the work is left with no visual shorthand for extreme amounts of wealth.

However, there was at least one use of silver-looking coins in Magical Mystery Cure. I believe Flutteryshy uses them to pay the balloonist pony.

Well, I wouldn't say that they were minted in solid gold but more like a 1-5% gold and 95-99% of another metal. Kind of like what Mountain said

I must have this. Silver is my metal. No, for real, I believe it to be good luck to carry silver.

How old are those coins? If that was before the return of Princess Luna, ponies must have been pretty confused about why there are two princesses.

I imagined them to be fairly new. After the return of Luna but before the return, and subsequent reformation of, Discord.

It's never been quite clear to me whether parts of Equestria's written history have been lost or if Equestrians are just really ignorant about the world they live in. Nobody recognized Nightmare Moon except Twilight, but they didn't recognize a zebra, or parasprites, either. Pinkie didn't know about griffons. The fact that the land Appleloosa was built on was already subject to territorial claim seems to have been a surprise. And so on. It also doesn't help their case to note that the town library seems to have been abandoned prior to Twilight's arrival.

So you're probably right. They would be pretty confused, but only because they need to read a few history books, not because the event is lost knowledge. =P (Razz)

My headcanon is that the reason so much knowledge is lost is that Celestia got tired of having to explain it over again every few centuries.

Perhaps they were promotional coins minted in celebration of Luna's return.

Wow, nice piece of work you got there. I really like the design, especially the Royal Sisters and Discord half because the carving is spectacular. Though the only thing I can think of that would've made this even better (and more authentic) would be if you used the made up language script you see in the books and newspapers of the MLP Universe. But I'm saying the impossible. It's still a fine piece of work though.
